Baby powder, also known as talcum powder, is a common household product used by millions of women around the world as a feminine hygiene product. What many people don’t know is that talc-based products may be giving women ovarian cancer.

Products from Johnson & Johnson, including Shower to Shower or Johnson’s Baby Powder, have been linked to cancer. In fact, hundreds of millions of dollars have already been paid to victims and their families by Johnson & Johnson through court cases and settlements.

How does talc cause cancer?

Because talcum powder is made from tiny particles of the naturally-occurring mineral called talc, the body has difficulty removing them, causing inflammation. Wherever the particles settle and become stuck within the body, a tumor may grow.

When regularly used as a feminine hygiene product, particles can build up over time and thousands of women are already potentially affected.

Minuscule particles may find their way into a woman's body through her reproductive system and become embedded within the ovaries. The particles irritate the ovaries, causing inflammation, possibly encouraging ovarian cancer cells to grow.

How have women fought back?

Victories for Women Like You & Their Families

Deborah Giannecchini, 62, was awarded $70 million dollars by a Missouri jury in October 2016. The jury agreed that her usage of Johnson & Johnson's talc-based powder for over forty years was the cause of her ovarian cancer.

Gloria Ristesund was awarded $55 million by a Missouri jury in May 2016. Even though she suffered from endometriosis, and was already at risk of developing cancer, it was argued that her regular use of talc-based powder increased her chances of developing cancer by 200 percent.

Jacqueline Fox's Family was awarded $72 Million in February 2016. The jury agreed that the cause of the ovarian cancer that killed her was due to her daily use of talc-based powder over the course of 35 years.

Update:

On April 27th, 2020 a favorable ruling now allows for expert witnesses to testify that talc is contaminated with asbestos and can cause ovarian cancer. J&J had sought to bar all of the plaintiffs' experts from testifying, which would have effectively wiped out all the cases. Thousands of pending lawsuits are now moving forward.
